Slow Down

escape sling parts, cloth horse harness, motor; single-channel video
dimensions variable, 45’’
2017

The beginning of the story is that I found a rusty escape sling located on the leisurely second-floor balcony. When I was picturing the possibility of people using this object, I accidentally discovered an animation video that the fire department made: a man with a horse face (? ) demonstrates how to use the escape sling to get out of the fire scene. Such amiable and even ridiculous image shows the immeasurable and unimaginable distance between us and the disaster, so the escape sling continues to have an undetectable oxidizing effect along with the air flowing on the balcony.

I disassembled the escape sling, scattered its parts along the escape path on the second floor, and then tied the disc that was supposed to throw out from the balcony to the door with a motor. It becomes the first contradictory role to the people in the building. The disc would then keep pushing against the door leading to the balcony, trying to alarm that something is happening. After the audience pushing the door, the cloth horse mask would be pulled up and become the second contradictory role. Synchronizing with the surveillance screen next to the door, the remake escape-sling-demonstration animation video is broadcasted. While the "horse" performs each step, the background is replaced with the corners or details of the space where the audience is. I tried to put the above-mentioned continuous actions back into the original escape path. Still, the unsuccessful disaster is like Déjà vu, becoming an eternally belated punch line in life.
